- Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)
An ode to both a great patriot and the country he loved, Yankee Doodle Dandy is a dramatic telling of the real life of George M. Cohan – the man synonymous with the birth of Broadway. Cohan penned such rousing musical rallying cries as Over There and You’re a Grand Old Flag – perhaps the most patriotic song ever.
Yankee Doodle Dandy’s ultra-patriotic red-white-and-blue movie poster was conceived by famed graphic designer Bill Gold, who also composed the iconic poster for the movie Casablanca – our No. 8 most patriotic movie ever. Yankee Doodle Dandy earns a rousing 91% from critics on RottenTomatoes.com
And in a bookend of sorts, the story of Cohan – a World War I patriot – is told in this movie starring James Cagney in 1942, at the outset of America’s entry into World War II. It’s also the year Cohan died.
To borrow a line from Cohan, Yankee Doodle Dandy is an emblem of the land we love.
And that’s why Yankee Doodle Dandy is No. 4 on BestEverBuzz’s list of the Top 10 Most Patriotic Movies Ever.
