Wow. It’s been 85 long years since its release, and yet 1939’s Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is No. 1 among BestEverBuzz’s Top-10 Most Patriotic Movies Ever.
Maybe today’s Congress – with a dismal 13% public approval rating – should be made to watch over and over Jimmy Stewart’s stirring portrayal of an idealistic young U.S. senator who stands for what’s right until he can’t stand anymore, staging an epic filibuster to defeat Washington, D.C. cynicism and corruption.
The Frank Capra classic, which earns a near-perfect 97% from critics at RottenTomatoes.com, rounds out BestEverBuzz’s Top-10 Most Patriotic Movies Ever in this, a special July 4th countdown.

This Jimmy Stewart/Frank Capra classic may never be surpassed as the most patriotic movie of all time. Stewart and Capra do for love of country what they did for love of life in It’s a Wonderful Life.
Stewart plays a prototypical grown-up Boy Scout – indeed, the virtuous leader of a fictional “Boy Rangers” troop – who is appointed to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy. Though expected to act the stooge and bend to corruption in his ranks, Stewart musters the courage and energy to filibuster the crooked proceedings, speaking until he captivates and galvanizes the nation.
His heroism and integrity in the face of cynicism and corruption inspires us still. It’s the model for the selfless citizen legislator the nation’s founders intended, and from which Congress has so hopelessly strayed.
