Best male actor voices ever have to include Donald Sutherland
If not for James Earl Jones, Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman, Donald Sutherland might be in a class of his own for best male actor voices of all time.
But a heavenly choir just earned one of the great voices ever with his death Thursday at 88.
His iconic voice was as silky as his flowing gray hair, as soothing as a siren’s and as dignified as his rugged good looks, which stood the test of time.
Across more than 200 film and TV appearances over 60 years, by Variety magazine’s count, Sutherland will always be best remembered for his foundational role in The Dirty Dozen and his breakthrough role in the movie, M*A*S*H, which spun into one of the most beloved television sitcoms of all time (coming in at No. 6 per Rolling Stone.) Many of us think of him as the pothead professor of Animal House. Then again, he lent an air of grandeur to Pride and Prejudice.
Later generations rightly link his legend to the wildly popular Hunger Games series of films.
It may seem obscure, but Donald Sutherland’s resonant voice will always take me back to the Civil War epic Cold Mountain. Though his role as Nicole Kidman’s preacher father was mournfully short, even a gentle version of his mountainous tones reverberated through the scenes.
Music producer David Foster once told protégé Josh Groban on stage that “there is such a place in this world for your voice.”
The same holds true for Donald Sutherland. We search for and share the best that life has to offer at BestEverBuzz.com. That’s what we do. And his is inarguably one of the best male actor voices ever.
God rest his soul, and thank you, Heavenly Father, for the all-too-brief time we had to watch and listen to him.
