Now, let’s look at No. 5 in BestEverBuzz’s Patriotic Movies July 4th countdown!

  1. Sands of Iwo Jima (1949)

Maybe it should be a statute that every statue should have a movie made about its back story.  The iconic raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima during World War II has been told several times – none more patriotically than in this 1949 film starring, of course, John Wayne.  Even the comic-book-like movie poster is worthy of a wartime morale-boost.

Featuring some of the actual flag-raisers themselves, Sands of Iwo Jima brings to life one of the most memorable and patriotic images in American war history.

What a comforting salve and point of pride this film must have been for the worn-out survivors of World War II, as they undertook to rebuild their lives – and to build America into a superpower.

The movie even scores a perfect 100% from the critics at RottenTomatoes.com.

And that’s why Sands of Iwo Jima is No. 5 in BestEverBuzz’s Patriotic Movies July 4th countdown.
