Searching for the best ever prime rib? Here’s what I’ve found so far
I’ve long joked my life is a search for the best ever prime rib. So when we moved from the Southeast back to my native Kansas City, I hated leaving Thoroughbreds Chophouse behind in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
But J. Alexander’s (aka Overland Park Grill) has more than made up for it – not just for me and my prime rib, but for my wife and her salmon.
Indeed, though regarded as one of the best steakhouses in KC, J. Alexander’s excels beyond all possible expectations with its perfectly grilled and seasoned salmon. My wife reports it’s among the best she’s ever had, including on the Eastern Seaboard.
They do their signature best ever prime rib exquisitely, certainly – cooked as it should be (not grilled or overly tinkered with), served with a convenient and savory cup of au jus and a side of abundantly flavorful smashed potatoes.
Alexander’s is simply where we go when we want to slip the surly bonds of Earth and experience a bit of heaven.
The ambience is stately, but homey; the wine selection is elegant; and the service is top-flight. I actually noted how upbeat and amiable the staff is even before reading on the company website that, “The happiness of our employees is our top priority.” Again, I’ve seen it for myself.
Not nearly as happy as we are when we dine there, though. In between holidays, the place makes its own special occasions.
Thankfully, you don’t have to be lucky enough to live in Kansas City, the Food Capital of the Midwest, to experience J. Alexander’s: It’s a family of restaurants with the same name, with dozens of locations across the country.
Kicking myself for not knowing about the ones in Atlanta and Raleigh when I lived that way!
But so thankful I ran across it here – notably after a long, lonely day of house hunting. I saw the restaurant’s sign and figured it had to be good. A weary traveler was instantly made to feel back at home, with some of the best ever prime rib.
